Mary Tamm: 1950 – 2012.
It was with great sadness that I leant this afternoon of Mary Tamm’s death this morning. My thoughts go out to her family, friends and those that knew her. Tom Baker naturally led the tributes; “She was a darling companion and wonderfully witty and kind. I’m so sorry to hear of her death.”
Normally the death of an actor, actress or any member in the public eye doesn’t usually affect me and I certainly don’t engage in the outpouring of grief that seems to be quite popular these days, but that’s usually because I have no emotional connection to them – even with those involved in Doctor Who, and just recently, we’ve had a fair few names go.
Mary Tamm however I do have a connection to, she was the second companion that I ever knew and she appeared in my favourite season of Doctor Who, The Key to Time. There was so much in those episodes that I enjoyed and is probably why a lot of my prop interests circle this era.
I genuinely am saddened.
What a lovely, beautiful lady she was and such a wonderful actress too.

i was sanded by the news i realy liked her as rommana and meeting her wasnt disappointed as a kid really nice lady and wow there going fast this year feels like end of a era somehow
I like how she was Drs equal and enjoyed her job
And seconded brilliant era, season long tie in but was not dull and the start of a nice run for tom ,nice props to TARDIS console room was well designed and i do like this console
Did you meet at conventions? I did get to see her at Chicago TARDIS 2000, and she was everything everyone had ever said about her.
You know, I’m not sure if I ever did meet her as I’ve only ever been to two conventions in the past. It’s posssible that she could have been at one of them, but at both, I didn’t really stop to talk to the guests.
To add a sad caveat to things, Mary Tamm’s husband died from a heart attack the evening after he gave the eulogy at Mary’s funeral. Now their daughter has two deal with the double blow of both her parents dying so close to each other.
Yes, it is rather sad. Apparently he was at home answering messages of condolence when this happened. It’s been all over the British press here for the past few days.
A double tragedy for all concerned.
